Reading Built completed our home renovation project and it was a great experience. We have worked with other contractors, and the level of care and expertise that Grant and his supporting cast bring to their work is very high. A major benefit of working with ReadingBuilt is that Grant is truly both a project manager and a craftsman. He has a keen design sense and cares about quality, and is able to perform a large portion of work himself while being onsite to personally orchestrate the work of different subcontractors. You won't find cut corners; the subcontractors that were brought on for specific parts of the job did similar top notch work. Grant is also a strong communicator, providing updates on schedule as needed to keep things moving smoothly and give us clear expectations about the progress of the work.

In the case of the added bath, a limited amount of available space required a design with wallmounted fixtures, a wall-embedded toilet tank, in-floor radiant heating, and a sliding pocket door all of which Grant built skillfully. Once the basic elements of the new bathroom were constructed, he completed the project with attention to all of the details of finish carpentry, glass work, tile work, and fixtures. Even after factoring in a time consuming process for permitting, interim inspections and final inspections within the City of San Francisco, Grant kept the project moving and completed everything the week before our son arrived.

Grant's passion for construction began during his childhood on the outskirts of Wellington, New Zealand, where he worked alongside his father on home projects. Grant traveled extensively through New Zealand and pursued a master's degree in urban planning at the University of Pennsylvania.

His academic focus on how the built environment impacts social behavior led him to the Bay Area, where he worked as an affordable housing developer. This experience deepened his commitment to creating structures that positively impact communities.

After that, Grant honed his expertise for five years working with leading construction firms in the East Bay and over the course of the past 15 years since the inception of his company, he has focused on delivering projects that marry craftsmanship with sustainable design principles.
